the luyas

Montreal Trio, The Luyas first came on my screen via the latest and venerable Pop Montreal Sampler, and have already foreshadowed some exciting sounds and styles. “Play Dead” touches eloquently on vintage Guided By Voices detuned singing, and indulges in that delicious post-rock inspired overdriven guitar-bass duet. At a fast two minutes and forty seconds, this track goes on my short n’ sweet mixtape. While I enjoy the music, I don’t know what can really be said about The Luyas’ immensely apologetic website (named “i am a sad website working hard for a living”). A harbinger of the uber-jaded, emotional, next generation of post-post-post rock? I don’t think so, but if you have a good color sense or work at a hospice, email these folks ASAP.

sam owens

Solo artists are something to behold. Their lyrics are almost always personal and their instrumentals are always simple. Whether it’s a guitar with a couple of other tracks layered with it or just the guitar; something personal always shines through when listening to a solo musician. A man by the name of Sam Owens happens to be wonderful solo musician with some excellent folk flair without the twang.
I received the mail from the extremely talented Sam Owens about nine minutes ago while I was eating a Cesear salad with chow mein, trying to stay warm, and studying for my Communication Theory class. When my little mail icon jumped up off of my dock on my computer; I instantly was distracted and checked my mail. What I found inside was an incredible and bittersweet acoustic track from Sam Owens that I’ve already stuck on repeat. The song, Miss Hummingbird may not be as upbeat and as poppy as some people may like their music mixed but it’s charm really lies in the simplicity of the soft string plucking and Sam’s impressive voice. Miss Hummingbird has instantly became one of my favorite songs and hopefully one of yours too.

nicolay

One of my favorite hip hop outfits is The Foreign Exchange. Little Brother is one half of this project and the other half is Nicolay. The producer from the Netherlands consistently produces tight beats and his sampling skills are spot on. His beats were some of the first to convince me that I loved hip hop and I’m thankful for it.
I’ve got some mad Nicolay tracks to share with you today. One is a solo track from his City Lights album, one is an instrumental from The Foreign Exchange, and the other sampler is a track from his collab. with Kay Jackson of The Foundation. The new album is called TIME:LINE and it’ll be dropping on February 1st. I really can’t get enough of this sampler and I’m sure you’ll feel the same after a few samples. It’s really good.

ultralyd
Norway isn’t just my favorite Scandinavian country for all its wind turbines. I’m also partial to the place because of its kickassfree-jazz/metal/spazwhatever outfit, Ultralyd. After recently coming across last year’s Conditions For A Piece Of Music, I was stunned to discover the obvious comparisons between the band and past great experimental composers, such as Iannis Xenakis, who is also one of my personal idols.
With noise and drone music going in and out of the average indie-rocker’s radar, it’s inspiring to see new musicians absorbing and evolving on the concepts so many popsters unfortunately ignore. Ultralyd’s ability to cohere form out of ambient noise (and we’re not talking about kitcshy intro/outro sound effects) allows the band to shoulder up to contemporaries from MEV to Tortoise. A fresh sound set sheds new light on forms that weren’t hackneyed to begin with, so enjoy “Low Waist” and put Ultralyd on your radar screen.

whitest boy alive
The music video has been saved by YouTube. That’s a pretty valid statement; especially after MTV and it’s clones decided to become reality show factories. With YouTube, every band and artist can archive their stuff on YouTube and with Google backing it, you know it’s not going anywhere soon. As YouTube becomes increasingly popular, the technology to create videos becomes much cheaper. I don’t recommend it but essentially you could go to Wal-Mart and acquire everything you need to produce a movie for extremely cheap. Now consumers have the creative tools in their hands. Now almost every artist and band has a music video; no matter how big nor small.
Whitest Boy Alive are gaining some popularity but the band is still relatively small. Then again, the following music video has already received more than a million views. The fact that it’s garnered that many views already means I’m late to the game but it also means that people are liking what they’re seeing and hearing from
Whitest Boy Alive. If you haven’t seen their Golden Cage music video yet then you’re in for a treat. It’s like this optical illusion mindfuck set to a nice tune.

the magnetic fields
The Magnetic Fields are famous for their 69 Love Songs album and rightfully so. The group has been making music since 1991. Led by Stephin Merrit, the group has an awesome indie pop sound that occasionally resembles the sounds of ’60s. Their new album, Distortion came out on Tuesday of this week and I’ve been jammin’ it all week and I must say; it’s very good.
The tune I’m sharing with you is this awesome little indie rock ballad about how much California girls suck. I personally don’t know of any California girls so I couldn’t say for sure whether or not they suck. Stephin Merrit seems to think so though.

crystal castles
Well the Digg story I told you about in the post below has decided to totally fail. So never mind about that. On to the good shit!
Alice Glass are Ethan Kath an awesome dancetronic duo called Crystal Castles and if you’re inclined to do so, they will totally make you want to dance or to make love; depending on the situation. Neither of these things are bad and are actually very healthy for you.
The song I’m sharing with you is called Untrust and it’s a quick little number that sort of feels like a club revival by a bunch of eclectic and glitchtastic robots who coindientally sing as well. The computerized lyricism in this song isn’t very discernible and it doesn’t actually matter because you’ll be too busy focusing on the addicting beats, plips, pings and beeps, that mix together to convince your appendages they should probably do a little moving.

Appe MacBook Air SuperDrive Only Works with MacBook Air
I have a ComboDrive MacBook and thought the new USB SuperDrive would be a great idea so I could burn DVDs. I could’ve went with a third party external drive but an official Apple product seemed better. The Apple Store says no and an Apple rep. I talked to said the USB SuperDrive “is only designed for the MacBook Air.” What?

MacWorld is today. El Jobso will be revealing some awesome Apple magic and if you want to follow along and/or see the transcript from the KeyNote then go here. Steve Jobs knows how to get a crowd excited and he definitely knows how to run a company. The man is an excellent businessman.
Speaking of businessmen, Canadian rapper Shad K. has a degree in business from Wilfrid Laurier University and he’s bi-lingual in French and English. His flow is exceptional and his message powerful and positive. His instrumentation and beat workings are really incredible too. I can’t believe I missed this album last year. It’s so refreshing to hear someone so talented as him actually have something incredible to say about his life and the world he lives in. He rhymes are relevant and tasteful. It’s good. It’s really good.
I feel guilty but I’m making up for it by listening now and givin’ you a chance to check out this wonderful music. Both of the trax I’m sharing with you come from his 2007 album, The Old Prince.
Now give this man a listen.

burial
It’s snowing outside and I’m wearing a sweater vest and sipping on some filtered water while chatting with my girlfriend. I always discover something new about myself when I talk with her; it’s very meditative. She’s an extremely lovely human being and her ability to offer advice is really unmatched by anyone I’ve ever met before.
Speaking of the word meditative; I’m a fan of meditative-esque music. (She is too actually!) Post rock, ambient electronic; those two definitely fit the bill for me a lot but I really like hip hop ambient sounds, especially from the likes of Nicolay and J Dilla. Another genre that fits this bill is dubstep. Our boy, Burial gets the job done.
We all love people who conceal their identity. It’s pretty bad ass. Just look at Banksy, the graffiti artist, the nameless, faceless man has been beautifully vandalizing the streets for years. Burial is the moniker of the anonymous dubstep artist from London. Burial creates absolutely gorgeous and critically acclaimed music that is easily danceable.
Enjoy two trax from his 2007 release, Untrue.
