film: persepolis

I’m not much for reviewing or recommending films as I don’t do it very often but after seeing Persepolis, I thought I might talk about it for a bit. The 2007 film focuses on Marjane Satrapi, a young Iranian girl growing during the Iranian Revolution. It’s a jaw-droppingly beautiful film that stays true to the original art of the graphic novel. In fact the entire film except for modern day scenes is done entirely in black and white. The result is an incredible feat in contrast, light, and shapes set against the backdrop of a beautiful story about a girl discovering the truth about herself and Iran. The movie is entirely in French but luckily the torrent link I’m including for you has subtitles. While the subtitles aren’t the original, they’re damn good and should be enough for you to enjoy the movie.

It’s almost like a fun history lesson at times since it’s so historically accurate, and it should be, it’s based upon a true story but it’s an interesting look at how families, citizens, and especially women were treated and still are treated today. While not entirely ground-breaking in story-telling or any sort of animation techniques, what it does, it does wonderfully and I whole-heartedly recommend that you watch this cinematic gem.
