music: francis and the lights
When I first heard Francis and the Lights I was in the library half-assing a study session with my girlfriend. Upon hearing the first song from the self-titled EP I was smiling and I immediately unplugged my headphones and plugged in hers. “Ha! It kind of reminds me of David Bowie”, she said. I agree with her, but not only does it sound a little like David Bowie it sounds like Francis and the Lights. The band is incredibly funky, original, and just downright fun. The vocalist is especially fun, he does this shit wacky falsetto shit that is totally addictive and it just fits so perfectly.
The groups instrumentation is grade A; it’s varied, sporadic, and beautifully layered. Their music has incredible production value and it shows. The number of instruments they’re using in combination with the excellent vocals and infectious synths make their sounds some of my new favorite of the year. I would share just one song but their entire EP is just incredible. Even better, Francis and the Lights are offering it up to you for free. It’s absolutely beautiful stuff that you have to download.

culture and music: the mars volta and aqua teen hunger force
What do The Mars Volta, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Neko Case and Kelly Hogan have to do with each other? Well, not a lot, actually – but just enough to write about! There was a recent episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force that featured the mythological Sirens (named Chrysanthemum and The BJ Queen) moving in to a vacant Aqua Teen house, along with their slave; former pro athlete John Cruk.
It was just another episode to me until the Sirens started singing – with really good voices! They sang one melody over and over again… something along the lines of ‘We’re getting it on’ but that wasn’t important, it was just the melody. Humor me, here. The next week I was listening to the new Mars Volta album, The Bedlam in Goliath. The third track started, and for a moment I felt like I was watching that Aqua Teen episode again. I swear to god, the beginning of Ilyena sounds just like the Sirens singing! Upon further research, I learned that the Sirens in that episode were played by Neko Case and Kelly Hogan. The oddness just doesn’t stop! Anyway, Ilyena happens to be my favorite track on the Volta’s new album, so any excuse to share it I’ll take.
Apparently, the creator of ATHF is making a new series with Neko Case as a pop star princess who tackles hardcore issues like racism and teen pregnancy with her music. I’m pretty excited.

music: a short lesson in electro
It’s been fun to watch the evolution of electro, hasn’t it? The word ‘electro’ started out as such an odd creature, no one was sure quite exactly what it meant. To some, electro meant anything with synthesizers (i.e. electro-rock). To others, electro meant the more avant garde side of dance music, with harder and heavier elements. In the end, it became neither. I feel a lynching coming on, but to me electro has become the ‘indie’ of electronic music – you’ll find the most obscure samples in it, you’ll hear the most innovative things the scene has to offer, and you’ll hear good music that your average candy kid or gamer won’t. And yes, that makes the whole genre seem quite pretentious to me; but why else would I like it so much?
That being said, when you go looking for electro; you’re reaching into a grab bag of genres. You never really know what you’re going to get. It’s fun when you get a few songs that you can group into their very own special category. Today’s episode is brought to you by pounding, driving and grinding beats mixed with soaring, easy to remember melodies! Shake your groove thangs all the way into the weekend with these tracks.
