Friday 05.02.08

Etan makes some ridiculous grindcore remixes straight from south Maryland that are sure to turn a few heads that are familiar with the base track and even you aren’t familiar, you’ll probably still dig it anyway. The Death Set remix I’m sharing with you clocks in at five minutes and thirty-seven seconds but you’ll most likely never tire of it before it completes and in fact you may be wanting more.

If you dig the following track then you should listen to more of Etan’s mix work at his MySpace.

before and after: ultra tiger pony(s) up!

postcard.jpg

I remember a time when it was extremely rare for me to find and enjoy a remix of a song before I heard the original version, but nowadays that really isn’t the case. With the way I raid the internet and my friends music collections for remixes, I often find bands through remixes of their songs that I happen to grab because I like the remixer. Yesterday my friend was blasting the Ultra Tiger remix of The Truth About Cats and Dogs (Is That They Die), and my ears did a double take. The vocal track was what really stuck out to me, as it was so perfect for the track – and yet sounded so out of place at the same time. My very first thoughts were ‘Huh, I wonder what the original track sounded like.’ So after a little bit of hunting, I found the original track, and was pretty surprised.

Like a lot of remixes, Ultra Tiger decides to truncate many of the verses of the track in order to keep a good rhythm going. It can be hard to make dance-able grooves that have to move around with shifting syllables, unless you’re pulling off something experimental. The original track has a lot more going for it in terms of song writing and overall aesthetics, but the remix has such a dance-rocky, balls-to-the-wall, groove-all-night aura that every time I listen to the original I find myself wanting to switch over. Either way, they’re both great tracks, and now there’s something for everyone – for the alt./chick rock inclined, we have the original Pony Up! track, and for those who crave mad beatz, we have the Ultra Tiger remix. Do you need any refills on water? Let me know when you need the check.

kissy sells out

kissy.jpg

This is about an eight minute remix that doesn’t ever grow boring. This is about the amazing story of a dude. His name – Kissy Sell Out. While on an epic adventure through the blogosphere one day I stumbled upon a surprising track – Kissy Sell Out’s ‘Welcome to the K Hole.’ It was an interesting introduction to KSO, but I could tell that I liked his style. It’s actually sort of hard to find his stuff – but after some serious searching I sort of gave up… until I was blessed with Blue Walrus’ fifth installment of their Step to the Electricity mix which featured a remix of English girl-band All Saint’s ‘Chick Fit.’ It. Blew. My. Mind. Seriously, I didn’t know a remix could be so good.

Anyway, it’s interesting to note that the original song has a few more verses, but Kissy decided to chop up one in his funkadelic shish-kabob. I think that this is one of the secret charms to the remix, allowing the listener to get lulled into the rhythm of the words themselves. If this one doesn’t get stuck in your head, I’ll eat my hat.

the hood internet

I’m sure everyone has already blogged about The Hood Internet but I haven’t gotten a chance to express my gratitude for the genius of these awesome bloggers and musicians. Essentially they collect, create and archive ridiculously good mash-ups between mainstream artists and indie artists. It’s impressive and fresh.

They just started last year and they’ve already acquired a following and some awesome merch hoodies that say “Listen to The Hood Internet.” Bad ass right? Definitely. Some people may say that mash-up artists and remixers don’t have much artistic integrity and besides, some of the remixes and mash-ups aren’t as good as the originals. In 2006, Gregg Gillis of Girl Talk gave the haters reasons to shut the fuck up with his incredibly wonderful mash-up booty-shaking magic, Night Ripper. It’s incredible album and if you haven’t had a chance to let Girl Talk grace your ears then you’re missing out. See one of his shows to, if not just to see him strip in front of a laptop. Shit is life changing and sexually charged. Hot stuff, I’m telling you.

Speaking of being sexually charged, our man R Kelly is a sex icon to the kids. Regardless of whether or not you think he was guilty or you think he has no talent, the man has a following and every single he puts out gets some major airplay on the terrestrial radios. Fuck terrestrial radio? I agree, but everything on them isn’t exactly shit.

I’m a Flirt is Mr.Kelly’s newest sensation and it’s been on 2007 song of the year lists for oh seven but we really don’t care about that. See, this post is about The Hood Internet and one of my favorites remixes by ABX. It’s fucking hot ass solid mash-up between Broken Social Scene’s Shoreline and I’m a Flirt. It’s absolutely golden. If you aren’t familiar with either song, the remix won’t seem as cool but once you hear all three songs you’ll wonder if you’ll ever need to hear he original versions individually ever again.

Enjoy these trax and your weekend!
