etan
Etan makes some ridiculous grindcore remixes straight from south Maryland that are sure to turn a few heads that are familiar with the base track and even you aren’t familiar, you’ll probably still dig it anyway. The Death Set remix I’m sharing with you clocks in at five minutes and thirty-seven seconds but you’ll most likely never tire of it before it completes and in fact you may be wanting more.
If you dig the following track then you should listen to more of Etan’s mix work at his MySpace.

lightning bolt
If you’re not a fan of noise; I can’t say I’m sure that Lightning Bolt is going to change your mind but if you’re a fan of the genre or are at least interested than I assure you that Lightning Bolt is at the head of the pack when it comes to creating avant garde noise.
The track I’m sharing with you is called Dracula Mountain and it’s an incredible noise gem from the Rhode Island band’s Wonderful Rainbow album. The track is absolutely stellar and throughout it’s five minutes, it’s just fucking wild.

music: man man
Ever heard of these guys? Jk-rofl, I know, but these Philly pranksters are releasing their latest album, Rabbit Hats, on April 8. If you missed the Stereogum coverage of their performances at SXSW, shame on you, but no worries, because I have redemption for you right here:
“Mister Jung Stuffed” is a pretty amazing introduction to their third full length in many ways. It certainly takes into account all their past tonalities, but dives halfway through into a fresh locale with some even newer sounds. Honus Honus, you’ve done it again.

music: francis and the lights
When I first heard Francis and the Lights I was in the library half-assing a study session with my girlfriend. Upon hearing the first song from the self-titled EP I was smiling and I immediately unplugged my headphones and plugged in hers. “Ha! It kind of reminds me of David Bowie”, she said. I agree with her, but not only does it sound a little like David Bowie it sounds like Francis and the Lights. The band is incredibly funky, original, and just downright fun. The vocalist is especially fun, he does this shit wacky falsetto shit that is totally addictive and it just fits so perfectly.
The groups instrumentation is grade A; it’s varied, sporadic, and beautifully layered. Their music has incredible production value and it shows. The number of instruments they’re using in combination with the excellent vocals and infectious synths make their sounds some of my new favorite of the year. I would share just one song but their entire EP is just incredible. Even better, Francis and the Lights are offering it up to you for free. It’s absolutely beautiful stuff that you have to download.

culture and music: the mars volta and aqua teen hunger force
What do The Mars Volta, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Neko Case and Kelly Hogan have to do with each other? Well, not a lot, actually – but just enough to write about! There was a recent episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force that featured the mythological Sirens (named Chrysanthemum and The BJ Queen) moving in to a vacant Aqua Teen house, along with their slave; former pro athlete John Cruk.
It was just another episode to me until the Sirens started singing – with really good voices! They sang one melody over and over again… something along the lines of ‘We’re getting it on’ but that wasn’t important, it was just the melody. Humor me, here. The next week I was listening to the new Mars Volta album, The Bedlam in Goliath. The third track started, and for a moment I felt like I was watching that Aqua Teen episode again. I swear to god, the beginning of Ilyena sounds just like the Sirens singing! Upon further research, I learned that the Sirens in that episode were played by Neko Case and Kelly Hogan. The oddness just doesn’t stop! Anyway, Ilyena happens to be my favorite track on the Volta’s new album, so any excuse to share it I’ll take.
Apparently, the creator of ATHF is making a new series with Neko Case as a pop star princess who tackles hardcore issues like racism and teen pregnancy with her music. I’m pretty excited.

before and after: ultra tiger pony(s) up!
I remember a time when it was extremely rare for me to find and enjoy a remix of a song before I heard the original version, but nowadays that really isn’t the case. With the way I raid the internet and my friends music collections for remixes, I often find bands through remixes of their songs that I happen to grab because I like the remixer. Yesterday my friend was blasting the Ultra Tiger remix of The Truth About Cats and Dogs (Is That They Die), and my ears did a double take. The vocal track was what really stuck out to me, as it was so perfect for the track – and yet sounded so out of place at the same time. My very first thoughts were ‘Huh, I wonder what the original track sounded like.’ So after a little bit of hunting, I found the original track, and was pretty surprised.
Like a lot of remixes, Ultra Tiger decides to truncate many of the verses of the track in order to keep a good rhythm going. It can be hard to make dance-able grooves that have to move around with shifting syllables, unless you’re pulling off something experimental. The original track has a lot more going for it in terms of song writing and overall aesthetics, but the remix has such a dance-rocky, balls-to-the-wall, groove-all-night aura that every time I listen to the original I find myself wanting to switch over. Either way, they’re both great tracks, and now there’s something for everyone – for the alt./chick rock inclined, we have the original Pony Up! track, and for those who crave mad beatz, we have the Ultra Tiger remix. Do you need any refills on water? Let me know when you need the check.

i make this sound
Local Vertical just informed me about a lovely new L.A. band, I Make This Sound has a CD to release on February 13. I’m getting a pretty heavy St. Vincent vibe from the mp3 I was able to locate, but do see for yourself.
I’ve been pretty interested lately in the fate of the pop supergroup, and by that I mean how far good songwriting and tight arrangements are going to continue to get bands where they want to be. I don’t think well done indie rock will ever really go out of style, but a host of clever up and comers (like I Make This Sound) will certainly test the boundaries. Being a 7-piece super group like IMTS undoubtedly takes a toll on finances and group patience, but the fact that these folks are going strong is an inspiring phenomenon in our rock-saturated epoch.

a destroyer is a fast and maneuverable yet long-endurance warship
I wanted to write a really ultra creative post describing Destroyer as a Lego Star Wars Destroyer Ship but instead I posted a picture and now I have that out of the way. Also, as much as I’d love to talk about Daniel Bejar and his awesome band, Destroyer and the new album that’ll be coming out in March, I’d much rather talk about home-made Lego USB drives.
Blam! Look at that Lego USB Drive! That shit is awesome and extremely easy to make. All you need is a USB drive, some Legos, an X-Acto knife and some glue. Fucking mind blowing right? Right! If you’d like your own Lego USB drive you could PayPal me like fifty dollars or you could go to Instructables and make your own.
Get your shit together and make one of these tight pieces. Listen to some brand spankin’ new Destroyer while doing so.

the long winters
I could so make a cliché reference about how this Winter seems long and how The Long Winters have “long winter” in their name or something or I could talk about the obscurities of the weather and how unreliable the weather predictions usually are; I could also talk about how absolutely cold it is outside or how it was raining this morning and now it’s snowing or wait is it raining again?
I could talk about the odd Ohio weather that I’ve been subject to for nineteen years but I’m sure that other mid-western states experience the same pain as us Ohions every year; yet we still live here and we haven’t stopped bitching.
I could talk about how The Long Winters make really excellent pop rock that is kind of like what U2 would’ve been like if Bono wasn’t from Europe; he didn’t suck; and he didn’t brag about how much he has helped the world. Homeboy did get an official U2 iPod made which was just a lame move on Apple’s part. Bad Steve Jobs. Bad.
I could talk about all the above stuff or I could just drop a few tunes for you to listen to into the weekend. Enjoy these trax!

the luyas

Montreal Trio, The Luyas first came on my screen via the latest and venerable Pop Montreal Sampler, and have already foreshadowed some exciting sounds and styles. “Play Dead” touches eloquently on vintage Guided By Voices detuned singing, and indulges in that delicious post-rock inspired overdriven guitar-bass duet. At a fast two minutes and forty seconds, this track goes on my short n’ sweet mixtape. While I enjoy the music, I don’t know what can really be said about The Luyas’ immensely apologetic website (named “i am a sad website working hard for a living”). A harbinger of the uber-jaded, emotional, next generation of post-post-post rock? I don’t think so, but if you have a good color sense or work at a hospice, email these folks ASAP.
