hiatus

Hi everyone! Thanks for reading Analog Scene, I have some info for you.

Analog Scene will officially be going on hiatus.

I no longer have much interest in music blogging.

I switched webhosts because my previous hosts were ripoffs so all of the mp3s are gone. Sorry!

I’ve enjoyed being in contact with some of the wonderful artists that I’ve talked to and wrote so thanks for all of your comments and submissions.

If you still wanna follow me you can find my personal site, here and you can find me on Tiny Mix Tapes, here.

If you still wanna keep track of the awesome Benjamin Bernstein than you should visit his awesome unsigned artist website, The Hippodrome. You can also read his excellent album reviews at Tiny Mix Tapes, here.

Analog Scene may return someday as something else other than an mp3 blog or maybe it’ll return as an mp3 blog. We’ll just have to wait and see.

Until then, enjoy your summer and thanks for reading!

the scene from here on in

Hi everyone! First off, thank you so much for reading Analog Scene! If you’re a regular reader, thank you even more! It’s so awesome to have a following so I appreciate it. I know that I haven’t been keeping up my end of the bargain so I just wanted to tell you about some changes at Analog Scene.

Analog Scene will only update three times a week now on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. This will enable me to do other things in my life and still run a quality blog about music. Also I’m going to try an emphasize smaller musicians now so none of that crazy hoopla on the bigger blogs will be repeated here.

I think that’s about it so keep enjoying Analog Scene as you have been and expect to see a consistent posting schedule again.
Thanks!

music: francis and the lights

fran.jpg

When I first heard Francis and the Lights I was in the library half-assing a study session with my girlfriend. Upon hearing the first song from the self-titled EP I was smiling and I immediately unplugged my headphones and plugged in hers. “Ha! It kind of reminds me of David Bowie”, she said. I agree with her, but not only does it sound a little like David Bowie it sounds like Francis and the Lights. The band is incredibly funky, original, and just downright fun. The vocalist is especially fun, he does this shit wacky falsetto shit that is totally addictive and it just fits so perfectly.

The groups instrumentation is grade A; it’s varied, sporadic, and beautifully layered. Their music has incredible production value and it shows. The number of instruments they’re using in combination with the excellent vocals and infectious synths make their sounds some of my new favorite of the year. I would share just one song but their entire EP is just incredible. Even better, Francis and the Lights are offering it up to you for free. It’s absolutely beautiful stuff that you have to download.

hanne hukkelberg and her unwillingness to share mp3s

001internets.gif

Ben had a really nice post about Hanne Hukkelberg and hopefully someday we’ll get to post it but for now I’m not going post it. I debated whether or not I should but Analog Scene is an mp3 blog and we need mp3s. What the shit? Ben nor I could find any mp3s from Hanne and It’s been a frustrating hour trying to find some mp3s for the post and I haven’t found any so I’ll take a moment to address something.

Listening to an artist on MySpace or in a flash player is cool but when I can’t get some mp3s on the artist, that means I can’t listen to them in iTunes or on my iPod and that’s a bummer. I really don’t want to support the artists who don’t want to share their music; sadly I must point out that record sales are going to continue to drop and artists will have to make the bulk of their money from touring and merch. Hanne and her record label don’t seem to understand this concept yet since they don’t have any mp3s available on their websites. I think these artists should embrace the technology of mp3s and share their music a little bit.

Analog Scene and tons of other mp3s blogs have more of a purpose than just sharing music; we also play a huge part in artist promotion and it’s disheartening to see some artists and labels not understand this.

Oh well, until Hanne Hukkelberg gets her shit straight and realizes that the internet is an excellent music distribution tool; we won’t be posting about her.

Instead you should totally give some of these old Girl Talk tracks a spin:

ultralyd

Norway isn’t just my favorite Scandinavian country for all its wind turbines. I’m also partial to the place because of its kickassfree-jazz/metal/spazwhatever outfit, Ultralyd. After recently coming across last year’s Conditions For A Piece Of Music, I was stunned to discover the obvious comparisons between the band and past great experimental composers, such as Iannis Xenakis, who is also one of my personal idols.

With noise and drone music going in and out of the average indie-rocker’s radar, it’s inspiring to see new musicians absorbing and evolving on the concepts so many popsters unfortunately ignore. Ultralyd’s ability to cohere form out of ambient noise (and we’re not talking about kitcshy intro/outro sound effects) allows the band to shoulder up to contemporaries from MEV to Tortoise. A fresh sound set sheds new light on forms that weren’t hackneyed to begin with, so enjoy “Low Waist” and put Ultralyd on your radar screen.

whitest boy alive

The music video has been saved by YouTube. That’s a pretty valid statement; especially after MTV and it’s clones decided to become reality show factories. With YouTube, every band and artist can archive their stuff on YouTube and with Google backing it, you know it’s not going anywhere soon. As YouTube becomes increasingly popular, the technology to create videos becomes much cheaper. I don’t recommend it but essentially you could go to Wal-Mart and acquire everything you need to produce a movie for extremely cheap. Now consumers have the creative tools in their hands. Now almost every artist and band has a music video; no matter how big nor small.

Whitest Boy Alive are gaining some popularity but the band is still relatively small. Then again, the following music video has already received more than a million views. The fact that it’s garnered that many views already means I’m late to the game but it also means that people are liking what they’re seeing and hearing from
Whitest Boy Alive. If you haven’t seen their Golden Cage music video yet then you’re in for a treat. It’s like this optical illusion mindfuck set to a nice tune.

Appe MacBook Air SuperDrive Only Works with MacBook Air

I have a ComboDrive MacBook and thought the new USB SuperDrive would be a great idea so I could burn DVDs. I could’ve went with a third party external drive but an official Apple product seemed better. The Apple Store says no and an Apple rep. I talked to said the USB SuperDrive “is only designed for the MacBook Air.” What?

the out_circuit

I no longer listen to dark music. It’s just something I’ve sort of pushed myself away from. I used to be into a lot of dark bands when I was younger and because of it my mood always consisted of me being pissed off a lot. I’ve recently took a dive into hip hop which can sometimes be pissed off and negative at times. Only difference between that and the music I listened to then and the music I listen to now is that it’s better and I can take a step back and let the music effect me for only a brief period of time, instead of letting it shape me. I believe a big factor in this is that I’m more self-aware than I used to be so I let what I want effect me.

The Out_Circuit play some dark post hardcore that is hard to not enjoy. The lead singer’s voice is absolutely scathing and the rest of the ambient instrumentation isn’t very relaxing either. Come Out Shooting is an absolutely uneasy song that you just can’t stop listening to. These guys have some points they want to get across, and they get it across pretty creatively with brutality. They definitely fail to fall into a particular genre which isn’t a bad thing because even though we think we’ve heard it all before; something like this comes along and bends the rules.

The charming thing about The Out_Circuit is that they are not trying to follow any set formula nor are they attempting to create a new one. As odd as that sounds, the point is that The Out_Circuit just exists and you either dig it or you don’t.
